the cities surrounding Nakhon Si Thammarat were from the names of 12 Zodiac Signs where
Trangapura was the city with nave base that used the sign of horse.
Trang meant small waves due to the wavy landscape in its north areas.

Tarangue is a Melayu language meaning dawn or morning. It was presumed that Melayu people and
people from other countries such as China, India, and Persia came on trading in this region and
arrived the estuary of Trang River exactly at dawn.
Trang Province
Regarding to the discovered evidences, Trang can be dated back to Ayutthaya Period. However,
some evidences made belief that Trang was a community lived before that era. Trang can be sorted
out by time: Neolithic Age, prehistoric of Siam, Sri Thamma Sokkaraj Period, Ayutthaya Period,
Thonburi Period, Early Rattanakosin Period, Phraya Mahasuriyawond periodj (Chuang Boonnak), and
Phraya Ratsadanupradit period (Korsimby Na Ranong).
Trang During Neolithic Age
In following to the discovered evidences that convinced the exist of Trang community since Neolithic
Age. Traces of human in Neolithic Age were found in many areas. Utensils, trivet pots, and polished
axes were found around Mount Sam Bart in Tambon Na Ta Luang. Human skeletons were found in
Tham Khao Phra in Huaiyod District. Pitchers of similar kind that were found in Sathing Phra district
of Songkhla, beads of similar discovery in Khlong Thaom district of Krabi, Mount Tohnae, Chao Mai
Beach in Kantang district of Trang are the evidences to prove that Trang has been a community not
less than 2,000 years ago.
Takola
According to the chronicle of Ptolemy that recorded from the telling of Alexander, a Greek navigator,
who travelled in during B.E. 74 to “Takola” town where was a seaport of Suwannabhumi or
Chrisausonesos and it existed in Milinthapanya Book which was written up about in B.E. 5 in the
name of Tokkol. Moreover, a chronicle of Tamil said that in Chola Dynasty during the reign of King
Rajendra Chola I (approximately in B.E. 1555 – 1585), Talaitokkol was mentioned and many
archaeologists considered that Takkola, Tokkol, Talaittakkolam are the same town. The Takola
should be the locality in Trang Province and nearby provinces especially Khlong Thom District of
Krabi Province in the present. An outstanding evidence that support this belief is the essay of Le
Mere, the author of South East Asian Culture that wrote about Takola as follows.
*The place might refer to Trang because the localities of Trang in Palien District and Kantang District
border on the sea of India Ocean that is a good harbour.
* A chronicle of Ptolemy wrote about Takola that as passing Ajira and cruised along the shore to
Bezinga Cape in Sarabag Bay (Phang Nga province in the present). Then it was the place where
Alexander, a Greek navigator, called it Golden City before arriving Takola. On southward with a
significant port town was only Trang.
*By physical geography, the trading route of Golden Peninsular between the east coast and the west
coast was from Takola to the Gulf of Thailand. The route should not be from Takuapa of Phang Nga
Province to Suratthani Province because of Khao Sok where there are many high mountains. So it
was not the route to transfer goods, but only a short way to cross the land. As Takola existed since
before the history of Thailand, if Takola was a community in the vicinity of Trang then it can be
summarized that Trang has been a town since before the history of Thailand.
